Traffic Climate in Germany

(29.04.2012)
In 2008 The UDV (German Insurers Accident Research) carried out a representative survey on the Traffic Climate in Germany for the first time. The starting point was the observation that there was no representative data available on road safety perception and self-reported road user behavior. The study “Verkehrsklima in Deutschland” (“Traffic Climate in Germany”) filled this gap. The aim of the study was to shed light on current road safety issues and follow road safety-related developments by means of a longitudinal approach. [more]

Safety Aspects of High-Speed Pedelecs

(09.11.2011)
Electric-assist bicycles (pedelecs) are becoming increasingly popular in Germany. According to the German two-wheeler industry association Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), around 200,000 were sold in 2010, and the association expects 300,000 to be sold in 2011. The percentage of sales accounted for high-speed pedelecs is now in the upper single-digit range. The market for retrofit kits is also growing, according to the ZIV. [more]

Effects of daytime running lights on road safety

(25.02.2011)
According to European Directive 2008/89/EC, from 7 February 2011 new vehicle models can only be registered if they are equipped with daytime running lights (ECE-R 48 and 87). For this reason the UDV (German Insurers Accident Research) in Berlin undertook a two-year project with the Chair of Lighting Technology of the Technische Universität Berlin and the research institute Human-Factors-Consult to examine the effects of driving with daytime running lights on road safety. Accidents involving tractors are rare but usually serious

(19.10.2010)
Tractors are relatively rare on German roads. Consequently, they do not figure largely in accident statistics. But when they are involved in accidents, more people than average are seriously injured or killed. For this reason, the UDV joined forces with the insurance companies Allianz and LVM to investigate where accidents involving tractors happen, the kind of accidents they are and the circumstances under which they occur. To this end, a database of 1010 accidents that occurred from 2006 to 2008 throughout Germany was set up and analyzed. [more]

Brain training and accident prevention

(19.10.2010)
As we get older, the brain’s performance deteriorates. This applies, in particular, to fluid cognitive functions such as attention, concentration or the speed at which information is processed. These functions provide a link between the sensory system and motor functions and are thus indispensable for complex perceptual processes and for planning and controlling what you do. When these functions deteriorate as a result of aging, the risk of having accidents both at home and on the roads increases. [more]

Accidents at roadwork sites

(19.10.2010)
Freeways (autobahns) are the highest-quality roads in Germany – and the safest. In terms of safety, their weak points are their slip roads and, above all, the sections whether there are roadworks, which interrupt the flow of traffic and repeatedly lead to serious accidents. In a study carried out by the Technische Universität Dresden and commissioned by the UDV (German Insurers Accident Research), the accident statistics at 12 roadwork sites with a total length of 68 km were analyzed, and five roadwork sites were subjected to a detailed investigation.
