On average, drivers in Germany undertake a total of over 100 million journeys a day by car. Accidents involving other road users can occur both during the parking manoeuvre and when the occupants of the vehicle get in or out.

All efforts made until now regarding pedestrian friendly car design focused on the vehicle front. All passive and active measures are designed to handle the impact of a pedestrian with the vehicle front which may include the wing area also. Accident research proves the vehicle front as the area to address first. But this study shows that there are accident patterns which need attention, too.

The Germany-wide analysis carried out by the UDV of over 4,100 streetcar accidents involving injury in the period from 2009 to 2011 showed that around 86 percent of these accidents happened at an intersection or within the sphere of influence of an intersection.
