Motorway

The backbone of the road network for long-distance traffic in Germany is formed by its autobahns, which have a total length of 13,000 km. Based on an average daily traffic volume of almost 50,000 vehicles and around 230 billion vehicle kilometers driven annually, autobahns are the safest roads in Germany. Nevertheless, significant numbers of accidents can occur at slip roads and sections where there are roadworks, in particular. Rising traffic volumes and a growing proportion of truck traffic also increase the risk of accidents on autobahns.

Distance-related behaviour on motorways

The failure to maintain adequate safety distance is the cause of many accidents on motorways. In 2022 17,755 accidents involving personal injury on motorways and 23,190 associated driving errors were recorded. Nearly a third of those errors...

Accidents caused by wrong-way driving on motorways

In Germany, approximately 1,950 incidents of wrong-way driving occur on motorways every year. By contrast, accidents resulting from wrong-way driving are rare but they have serious consequences. The purpose of the present study was to use...

Road safety on federal motorways

In terms of mileage, federal motorways are considered as particularly safe roads. However, on no other roads in Germany are so many injuries registered per kilometre by road traffic accidents. Accidents in longitudinal traffic are particularly...

Accidents at roadwork sites

Freeways (autobahns) are the highest-quality roads in Germany – and the safest. In terms of safety, their weak points are their slip roads and, above all, the sections whether there are roadworks, which interrupt the flow of traffic and...

Traffic signs on highways in „selective yellow“

Construction sites on motorways are comparatively safe. However, accidents occur more frequently at the beginning of construction sites, at slight bends (by reducing the number of lanes) and temporary accesses or exits of slip roads within...
