Rural roads

Depending on the road authority or public agency responsible for them, these may be federal highways (Bundesstraßen), state highways (Landesstraßen and Staatsstraßen), district highways (Kreisstraßen) or municipal roads (Gemeindestraßen). The majority of fatal accidents on German roads occur on roads outside built-up areas. Collisions with trees, motorcycle accidents and overtaking accidents particularly often result in very serious consequences. Accidents involving wild animals are less serious but occur more frequently. Around 250,000 accidents involving wild animals are reported each year.
